Vega Americas, a leading manufacturer of sensors for level, point level, and pressure measurement, operates on a 21,000 m2 campus in Cincinnati, Ohio. In order to meet space requirements and boost operational efficiency, Vega Americas deployed multiple Vertical Lift Modules (VLMs) by Modula in various departments throughout its facility. This strategic decision allowed the company to streamline its storage and picking processes, with each unit tailored to meet the various departments’ specific needs.
Optimisation of Space and Operational Efficiency
The integration of Modula modules throughout the facility enabled Vega Americas to make optimal use of its available space. With a total storage capacity of 86 m³ (3,040 ft³), the company managed to consolidate its vast inventory in just 62 m² (664 ft²) of floor space, thus freeing up valuable space for other operations. This compact configuration has radically transformed Vega’s logistics efficiency, creating an organised and functional warehouse environment, with enhanced safety/security, and faster access to materials.
A Diversified Solution for Various Storage Needs
In order to meet specific storage needs in each department, Vega Americas invested in various Modula VLM models, each with unique technical features:
- Two ML50D units: Each with 66 trays, a height of 7.1 metres (23.29 ft), and a load capacity per tray of 500 kg (1,102 lbs).
- One ML50D unit: With 36 trays, a height of 8.5 metres (27.89 ft), and a load capacity per tray of 500 kg (1,102 lbs).
- One ML50 unit: With 47 trays, a height of 7.1 metres (23.29 ft), and a load capacity per tray of 500 kg (1,102 lbs).
- One MA50D unit: With 35 trays, a height of 8.5 metres (27.89 ft), and a load capacity per tray of 500 kg (1,102 lbs).
This combination of models enabled Vega Americas to tailor each VLM precisely to each department’s operational needs, ensuring every area has the required capacity and load to store various materials in an optimal manner.
Advantages for the Sensor Manufacturing Industry
In the sensor manufacturing industry, space optimisation and accurate inventory management are crucial to ensuring timely and precise operations. By implementing Modula VLMs, Vega Americas has greatly enhanced safety, while at the same time reducing picking errors and protecting its delicate components in a secure, organised environment. The operators now enjoy simplified, rapid access to materials, which are automatically brought to their level, thus improving ergonomics and reducing wait times.
Tangible Results
Through this strategic use of Modula VLM warehouses, Vega Americas has expanded its storage capacity, boosted efficiency, and minimised its physical footprint, effectively addressing the industry’s major logistical challenges. The Vega Americas case study shows how a diversified and technologically advanced storage solution can make all the difference in a highly specialised production environment.
